WORKSHOP: Pedestrian Crashes

Overview:

The analysis of vehicle speeds and pedestrian dynamics in vehicle/pedestrian collisions is frequently difficult as a result of evidence that is not found or of a necessity must be estimated. There are numerous equations that have been developed through research and testing for the purpose of analyzing vehicle impact speed. Most of these equations are collision-type specific and are only applicable in certain kinds of vehicle/pedestrian impacts such as forward projection, hood wrap, fender vault or roof vault. Unfortunately many of the variables necessary for vehicle/pedestrian speed analysis equations must be estimated. Examples of these variables would be: Pedestrian slide or tumble coefficient of friction, pedestrian center of mass, pedestrian take off angle or even the location of the point of impact. In part I of this session some of the data from the previous vehicle/pedestrian crash test will be provided and estimating the remainder will be discussed as well as which equations. Participants will pick an equation or equations from list provided and will calculate the speed of the striking vehicle. The instrumented speed of the vehicle will be provided in part II for comparison. In addition, in part II other methodologies in dealing with these often difficult analyses will be discussed.

Bio - C.R. "Chuck" Lewis

Mr. Lewis served with the Alaska State Troopers for 15 years from 1970 until 1985 in Anchorage, Soldotna, Fairbanks, Juneau and Sitka where he was stationed at the Alaska Department of Public Safety Training Academy as an instructor.  In addition to teaching at the Alaska DPS Academy he has taught traffic accident reconstruction for Northwestern University’s Traffic Institute (now the Center for Police Studies) and for Texas A&M University’s Texas Engineering Extension.  Mr. Lewis has been a traffic accident reconstructionist in private practice for 22 years, analyzing all types of motor vehicle, bicyclist and pedestrian collisions for plaintiff and defense law firms as well as insurance companies and government entities.
